Retreat review

Retreat

A couple return to a cottage on a private island, when their relationship struggles after a miscarriage. Some generator problems and a blooded stranger with the threat of a pandemic later and we have the setting of our story.

Starring Tandie Newton (Rock n Rolla), Cillian Murphy (28 Days later) and Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot) this film has a class cast, so the limited release and almost straight to DVD release really surprises me. Every one is on top form and delivers some fantastic performances, simply superb.

The film is tense from start till the mind blowing finale. At first it feels almost as awkward as being around an arguing couple (we all know how that feels). We watch, sometimes painfully, an awkward couple struggle around each other and then Bell arrives who actually brings the couples relationship closer, and who wouldn't get closer to their partner in times of imminent death by apparent viral disease or crazy stranger?

Good story, well written but with some predictable dialogue. This story has more twists and turns then a fusilli pasta shape. All in all it was a great film with a small but fantastic cast. It appears that sometimes film goers, less is definitely more. And this movie is more (does that make sense? I hope you at least get what I'm trying to say). If you like tense, thrillers with some delicious home grown talent, watch this film!

Retreat- running time 82 minutes

Limited release on 14th October with DVD release on 17th by Sony Home Ent.

The Avengers team!

Here is a pic of Marvel's Avengers team, consisting of Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, The Hulk, Hawkeye and of course Thor.

It's a pretty cool pic although it would be better if they were actually together! And it's the first time we see Evans in the new Cap uniform since the teaser trailer at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger.

Catwoman gets Ears!

I don't know if everyone has seen the images of Ann Hathaway's Catwoman on the set of The Dark Knight Rises but there was a lot of talk about her "ears" and lack thereof.

Now images have appeared of Hathaway with cat-ears! I'm not quite sure what to make of it but it's not like my opinions will change the costume either way! One thing I have noticed is that she is more 60s Carewoman than her previous costume which was more like the recent comic costume where she wears high-tech goggles. Also what sort of thief walks around with their hair out? All it takes is a forensic scientist to find that shut at the scene of the crime and that's it for her!

I'm sure come film release that it'll be fine and we won't even notice it but until then, what do you guys think??

Avatar going to Disney?

Everyone remembers Avatar, you know, that film that started off a new wave of 3D films?

Well Avatar creator James "Gimme your money" Cameron has teamed up with Disney imagineers to create a Pandora themed ride! Yes that's right, a ride.

Cameron had this to say:

“Avatar created a world which audiences can discover again and again and now, through this incredible partnership with Disney, we’ll be able to bring Pandora to life like never before. With two new Avatar films currently in development, we’ll have even more locations, characters and stories to explore. I’m chomping at the bit to start work with Disney’s legendary Imagineers to bring our Avatar universe to life. Our goal is to go beyond current boundaries of technical innovation and experiential storytelling, and give park goers the chance to see, hear, and touch the world of Avatar with an unprecedented sense of reality.”

Apparently the ride will be ready for 2013 and if done right may be one helluva ride, with a $400 million budget could it possibly be a flop? I don't think so but we'll see.

Films with smoking in it could get an automatic 18 band

According to The British Medical Journal, films which depict actors smoking should get an automatic 18 band.

Researchers from the UK Centre for Tobacco Control are calling for films that feature characters smoking to get the same classification as films which feature sex or violence.

Apparently children under 15 are exposed to characters that smoke from a very young age and are more likely to smoke than kids who do not watch the same films.....I personally think this is utter hogwash and refuse to believe that it's films like Lord of The Rings and 101 Dalmatians that make kids want to smoke, I mean come on! Really? Let us know what you guys think!

Finally after 6 years. DEAD OR ALIVE 5 is finally coming out

I don't but i really excited to find out that DEAD OR ALIVE 5 is actually coming out. I have been a fan of the DOA series for the last 14 years. When i first played it in the arcades and i ain't gonna lie and say the game play was the main reason i played it at as 11 year old. It was the bouncing boobies. You can't really blame me. I was a 11 year old boy. But it wasn't till DOA 2 came out on the Dreamcast i started to take the game seriously and since then i have bought every game since. DOA 2 on the Dreamcast, DOA 2:Hardcore on the Playstation 2, DOA 3 on the Xbox, DOA:Ultimate on the Xbox which was just a remake of DOA 2, DOA Volley ball and DOA 4. Each game i put a lot of man-hours in too. I even watched the Film which everyone hates but i actually liked it. I was a lot better then the Tekken Movie.

So when i found out DOA 5 was coming out i get so excited and that was like 3 years ago. I started to think that Team Ninja was lying to me and i kinda forgot. Then DOA Dimension came out on the Nintendo 3DS. I know DOA 5 would be on the way and i wake up this morning there it was a trailer. A trailer they showed at The Tokyo Game Show. All i can say is that the trailer looks AWESOME. TEAM Ninja said that in DOA 5 the fighting will center around using the stage to win. Everything on the stage can be used as a weapon. There is no word on when its going to come out but i know its some time next year.

Am off to watch the trailer again but am going to leave you with a little gift.

Van Damme and Chuck Norris are Confirmed to be The Expendables 2

The heavens have answered my prays and the legend of all legends. The Great Chuck Norris is going to be in the Expendables 2 as with Jean Claude Van Damme. They are also trying to get Nic Cage and John Travolta to be in the film too or at least make a cameo. I just hope Stone Cold Steve Austin is gonna come back. From what i heard he was going to be as this previous character's twin brother, but that could be a rumors. But fingers crossed.

When i found out more on the cast i will keep you all posted

FOX Developing DC's The Spectre

Well it looks like DC comics have another show in the pipeline based on another Supernatural Character and this time is The Spectre. The website Deadline have reported that the Television Network FOX are planning to bring the Spectre to the small screen. For those who don't know who the Spectre is. He is Jim Corrigan, a former cop was killed and become the Spirit of Vengeance. To be honest Jim Corrigan was the first Spectre. There has been 3 and included Hal Jordan. Hopefully this Show actually sees the light of day and doesn't end up like Wonder Woman.

Hopefully the Spirit of Vengeance doesn't come looking for my ass.

Cable is coming back and this time he is fighting the Avengers???

Its a official, after dying over a year ago in Second Coming. Cable is coming back. Marvel teased this at San Diego Comic-con with a poster saying "Cable Reborn" and this morning Marvel announced that he will be coming back and he is fighting the Avengers in a four part mini written by Jeph Loeb and art by Ed McGuinness.

I have two problems with this news. Firstly Cable only died ago and he is already coming back. I love Cable but i think its to early for him to come back, unless he ain't coming coming back and its someone using his image. Like Ultron fusing himself with Cable's dead body to become human. Personally if Cable was to come back, it should be in an X-men title, not the Avengers. My second problem is Jeph Loeb writing this four part mini. To me Jeph Loeb is one of those hit or miss writers. I liked Loeb's Batman: Hush but i hated his Hulk run and Ultimatum which nobody liked and i mean NO-ONE. But only time will tell if this will be any good.

Now am gonna take a nap and after that am gonna go and find my son who i sent to the future. Wish me luck

Those GODDAMNED 3D REMAKES

If you haven't heard by now, Hollywood execs plan to remake a number of films and low and behold in 3D!!

The biggest one to piss me off personally?? Top Gun....yes you read correctly and to save you from re-reading I'll type it again...Top Gun.

You know, the film starring Tom Cruise as Maverick with his flight partner and as many may say Homosexual life partner Goose. The film about fighter pilots yet manages to be more feminine than all the Sex in the City series and movies rolled into one? The film with possibly the most annoying theme song in the history of theme songs?

My beef isn't with them re-making this film... But What in God's name gave these guys the idea to do it in 3 f***ing D???

Jurassic Park? Who wouldn't wanna see T-Rex Chase down an Ingen jeep or a Triceratops battle with Raptors?

GhostBusters? A 3D Slimer yeh why not?

But Top Gun??? Really?? Tom Cruise (or some wanna be cruise) spending more time on a bike than a jet?? Come one man, that's weak. All I'm saying is there better be more dog fights in this film.

I'm @GeorgeK1988 and hearing this news almost took my breath away.

X-men Schism Aftermath: Wolverine and his band of X-men and Cyclops and his Uncanny X-men

There is 2 more issues of X-men Centered event Schism to go and for the last 2 weeks, Marvel have been letting out teaser image of the two different X-men teams after Wolverine and Cyclops go their different ways. Marvel even teased that Cyclops might even but the bullet. But thank Rao, he ain't going to die. Now finally Marvel has released the mains characters on Wolverine and Cyclops' team of X-men. The Gold and the Blue team. I have to say, being a Wolverine Fan, am actually looking Cyclops team a bit more. Well Cyclops main teams anyways. Like the New Mutants and The Uncanny X-men.

Characters left to right: Psylocke, DeadPool, Fantomex, Age of Apocalypse Nightclawer, Quinton Quires, Wolverine, Idie Ice-man, Beast, Shadow-cat, Gambit, Phoenix 2 (Rachel Summers), Frenzy, Strong-guy, Madrox, Longshot, Shatter-star, Polaris, Havok, Wolfbane, Banshee, Monet, Layla Miller and Rictor.

So here is Wolverine's team of X-men. The interesting thing is that Ice-man, Beast, Havok and Rachel Summer who are all really close to Cyclops decide to join Wolverine. Cyclops must do something that really pissed them off. I know why X-Factor would join Wolverine as they are based in New York and Wolverine is moving back to New York. Plus Madrox doesn't get on with Cyclops. Another random member of Wolverine's X-men is Quinton Quires who was the guys who started the whole schism between Cyclops and Wolverine. Also is it me or does X-Factor seem a bit over powered as they have like 10 members on their team? Hopefully this year Ice-man actually gets some screen time.

Characters from left to right. Rei, Primal, Velocidad, Sebastian Staw, Transonic, Hope, Warpath, Jubilee, Psylocke, Domino, Storm, Magneto, Danger, Cyclops, Emma Frost, Colossus, Magik, Danni Moonstone, X-man, Cypher, Sunspot, Magma and Warlock

This team seems more A-list to me. You got all the heavy hitters compared to Wolverine's team of X-men. Its  interesting that Colossus and Shadow-cat ain't on the same team. I wonder if they are still together. Also weird that Jubilee ain't on the same team as Wolverine as he is like a father to her unless its the whole vampire thing. Am still confused about Psylocke being on 2 teams. Unless she is a spy. I also funny that Cyclops' brother and daughter are on Wolverine's team. All Cyclops has is his son X-man. I know Warpath wouldn't join Wolverine after all the stuff that went down in Nercosha.

The thing i really wanna know is where are the younger mutants like Anole, Rockslide and the others gonna go? I miss those guy.

Who team do you think is better??

Am off to catch a flight to Utopia to Join Cyclops. Peace out Kyle @JohnnyTimpulse

Dragon Ball Z Ultimate Tenkaichi Story mode trailer

So Namco/ Bandai have finally put together a trailer for their 10th Dragon Ball Z game. Well am not really sure if it's their 10th game but i like to think it is as i have bought all of them over the last 8 years. The trailer looks pretty awesome and they have bought back Story mode to the game and they have actually re-animated some of the scenes from the original Dragon Ball Z cartoon. They it looks beautiful. I just hope the game goes through the  all the sagas including Dragon Ball GT. But have heard from my brother, the Golden Oozaru (the Golden Giant monkey) is in it. But who knows. Well i hope you enjoy the trailer

Am off to go and fight Yamcha as he is the weakest Z-Fighter. So i think i have a chance.

World War Z footage: Zombies hate cars

Some footage of a zombie attack has emerged on YouTube of the set of Brad Pitt zombie flick 'World War Z' and it looks pretty awesome. But one question, after a zombie attacks and turns his victim, do the new-zombies have a hatred for cars?

Fright Fest 2011 review

Fright Fest 2011

Every August bank holiday thousands of gore hounds ascend upon London’s Leicester Square for the UK’s premiere horror and fantasy film festival. Playing host to over forty movies, many of them being either world or UK premieres, this is truly the weekend that cinephiles the world over should all have marked down on their calendar. Opening on the Thursday night with the UK premiere of the Guilermo Del Toro produced Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark and closing on bank holiday Monday with the hotly anticipated survival shocker A Lonely Place To Die along with first showings of Fright Night 3D, Ti West’s The Inkeepers and Brit horror flick Kill List, Fright Fest 2011 would be the biggest Fright Fest yet! I headed down to Leicester Square for the opening night and here is my pick of the good, the bad and the damn right nasty from the weekend!

Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark (****): Written and produced by Guilermo Del Toro, this has been a labour of love for the big man as it has taken him years to get the movie made but it will finally see a release this October. Don’t Be Afraid is a remake of a 1973 TV movie of the same name, a TV movie that most people will never have heard of which is always a good thing when it comes to movie remakes. The story goes a little like this - a young girl (Baille Maddison) is sent to live with her father (Guy Pearce) and his new girlfriend (Katie Holmes) and discovers strange creatures in her new home who want to claim her as one of their own. Troy Nixey’s remake enters classic haunted house territory and it has a great old school horror vibe to it that I really love, also the good news is that is has Del Toro’s finger prints all over it and I found myself at several points having flashbacks to Pans Labyrinth. The big scares here come courtesy of the evil fairy creatures that are creepy as hell (expecting anything less from Del Toro?) these things are damn right nasty, hell they are the worst tiny terrors on the big screen since those pesky Critters!!!

Final Destination 5 (***): You know exactly what you are getting when you go se a Final Destination movie, the formula has not changed since the first movie which was released eleven years ago now and to be honest that is not such a bad thing! With the 3D gimmick also now commonplace with the franchise, the movies have the same feel as taking a trip to Thorpe Park and going on your favourite ride – a rollercoaster ride of death from start to finish Final Destination 5 surprisingly rises above the other sequels in the series and it is no exaggeration to say this is the best entry since the original, for me the reason behind this stems from it not taking itself too seriously and the comedy has been heavily ramped up and to great affect. Oh any best news of all – Tony Todd is back for his usual cameo which is always a highlight of these movies!

The Theatre Bizarre (*): Theatre Bizarre follows in the footsteps of a long line of classic horror anthology movies, this sub genre is a big favourite of mine with the anthology’s from both Hammer and Amicus back in the 60’s and early 70’s being amongst my favourites, so naturally I had high hopes for this movie, I mean seven horror greats coming together for a collection of seven macabre shorts – what could be better? God I wish I had set my expectations lower! The stories on offer here range from horribly average to damn right garbage, the running time is also around an hour too long and had this been cut down to four stories then it may have had a better flow to it. Richard Stanley’s Mother Of Toads gets the movie off to a decent start with a very predictable but still creative story with a very Lovecraftian flavour to it. Next up is the morbid love story I Love You which is definitely the pick of the bunch. Tom Savini’s Wet Dreams is an amateurish effort from a horror maestro who should know better. The Accident is a very poignant story but seems very out of place here in this ultra gory collection. Vision Stains and Sweets round out the collection and I guess the worst was left to last as this double header is absolute dross! It is unlikely that Theatre Bizarre will ever see a theatrical release, still avoid at all costs!

Tucker And Dale VS Evil (****): Tucker and Dale is the story of two hapless hillbillies who head out into the woods to fix up their new vacation home only to come up against a group of college kids who are under the impression that the duo are of the Wrong Turn redneck ilk and are going to kill them off one by one – alas hilarious major misunderstandings abound and a blood bath ensues! Tucker and Dale is a comedic twist on movies such as Texas Chainsaw and Wrong Turn, It truly is a laugh out loud flick from start to finish and at the same time offers up plenty of inventive death scenes and nail biting moments. Alan Tudyk (Firefly) and Tyler Labine (Reaper) are first class as the title characters, both of these actors excel in these types of comedic roles and the chemistry between the duo here is first rate. Tucker And Dale will not see a widespread theatrical release here in the UK but will hit DVD AND Blu Ray at the end of September and I cannot recommend it highly enough, yes it is silly but I’ll go on record and say this is the comedy event of 2011!

Troll Hunter (****): As would be expected Troll Hunter went down a treat with the Fright Fest faithful, you can read my full review on the movie by scrolling the AOTA archives.

The Wicker Tree (***): Based on Robin Hardy’s novel Cowboys For Christ, this is a sequel/reimagining to his classic 1973 movie The Wicker Man. The Wicker Tree is a highly engaging movie that will keep you entertained throughout, my only complaint with Hardy’s new entry into the series is that the horror aspect is almost non existent until the final twenty minutes with the first seventy played mainly for laughs. Still this is definitely one to check out when it gets a DVD release in the first half of 2012.

Fright Night 3D (***): A big budget Disney remake of a classic 1985 vampire movie with Colin Farell in the lead role as the sexy vampire next door? You gotta be fucking kidding me right???!!! That was my initial reaction to the news that Fright Night would be remade for 2011, one of my favourite 80’s horror movies this was bound to be shite! Right? Actually wrong as 2011’s Fright Night 3D is actually one of the best vampire movies to hit the big screen in quite some time, the 3D may be pointless but the classic story in still intact (well with a few tweaks) and the casting is very good with Farrell being excellent as Jerry and Anton Yelchin, Toni Collete and David Tennant all fantastic in their roles. As far as the cast goes, the major downfall for was Chris Mintz-Plasse in the role of Evil as Stephen Geoffreys was the highlight of the 1985 original when he portrayed the role. Look out for cameo from original Jerry – Chris Sarandon, this had the fright fest faithful up on their feet cheering at the premiere!

The Inkeepers (**): Ti West is a Fright Fest favourite so there was never any doubt that he would not return with his latest offering Inkeepers, A slacker-horror centered on the last two employees at a haunted hotel that's going out of business. Now I like Ti West and I did want to like The Inkeepers but for me it just felt like it had something missing, I cannot say too much without giving the movie away but come the final frame I felt slightly cheated over what I had seen in the past ninety minutes. Sara Paxton is fantastic in the lead role of slacker Claire and without her this may have fell totally on its arse but she is likeable enough of a character to keep you gripped at her ghost hunting exploits. I may be being a little harsh here as The Inkeepers was one of the biggest hits with fans at this year’s festival but for me it felt a little flat but hey there is always a chance I’ll give it a second chance!

Apollo 18 review

Houston, do we have a problem??

Going into this screening I didn't know what to expect, I mean I knew what the film was about and how the story would be told (first hand accounts using "lost footage") but I didn't know if I was excited or what.

I'm a big space nut, so when I heard about this film I knew I had to watch it but wasn't sure what conspiracy they would turn to (won't give anything away) but it's a solid theory that has been going on for years.

Apollo 18 is a film based on conspiracy theories as to why we haven't been back to the moon (if we even got there in the first place) shot as though the archive footage was discovered, the story tells of three astronauts who are rocketed to the moon on a top secret mission, one the public are not meant to know about. As they go on with there mission they start to unravel a secret they were not meant to discover and all hell breaks loose.

As the film plays it no doubt has some creepy moments but nothing worth spilling your popcorn over or covering your eyes over although it does make you want to keep watching. The film is edited very well but sometimes I felt that the film going out of frame got pretty annoying (made me want to bang the side of the screen to straighten it out if I could)

The acting is great and the camera angles are great at concealing certain things but the whole time I never thought this could be real (and Timur Berbembatov's Executive producing credit fuelled the thought)

So is Apollo 18 a rocket fuelled by tension, horror and truth or does Huston have a problem? To be honest I don't know, As much as I liked it I can't help but think it won't do too well. It's a good film and like Paranormal Activity people may believe it is real but I can't see this making any big waves.

Watch if you liked 'The Fourth Kind' or 'Paranormal Activity'

I'm @GeorgeK1988 and I'm blasting off
